16493 John McDermott <mcdermott@i...> 1997‑04‑09 BIO

Ob. Bio.

A neophyte woodworker from Arlington, Virginia. Primarily interested in handtool
techniques and occasionally buying. After using an old plane from MofA, I found
that old hand tools were much better than new hand tools, so here I am.

I am 45. Spent some time in the US Coast Guard, kicked around the ice fields of
the Arctic and the Antarctic, then went back to school to learn a trade. I am cu
rrently employed as a confuser scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory, where
I think deep thoughts on WHAT CAN WE DO BAD TO THIS COMPUTER?

I have two kids in parochial school, a third one who appears to be going to grow
up to be forklift, and a single income, so I buy wood and tools at a slow rate,
but lurk furiously. My bride tries to understand, but keeps suggesting that I b
uy power tools like Norm's, because my hand tool output is too slow.

(Bob Hall posted his bio on Saturday.)

Welcome, Bob! You are about to be bombarded with email generated by FMM (First
Monday Madness, or something like that), the once-a-month on-line flea market
on the OLDTOOLS list. Look out for good deals and act fast (respond by priv
ate email only)!

Since subscribing to oldtools a few weeks ago I look forward now to reading my
daily e-mail.

I agree. When the listserver goes down, there's a big emptiness in the inbox.

I am trying to master the Galoot lingo and ask questions when stuck. How about
IMHO & IMVHO ?

Here are those and a few more common ones:

IMHO = In my humble opinion
IMVHO = In my very humble opinion FMM = First Monday Madness The Porch = the OLD
TOOLS List Galoot = anyone on the porch IT = Independence Tools (makers of fine
saws and scraper blades, more to come) MoA = Merchant of Ashby (Pat Leach) PRINY
= Peoples Republic of Ithaca, NY

Paul--
Rest assured that both old coot and codger are alive and well in
English speaking North America, as well. The generic form of "galoot" may
be similar to some degree, but it has the advantage of not being age
specific. Some of us are old enough to be codgers, but as OldToolers are
proud to be Galoots, of any age.
	Welcome to the Porch.

the "other Tom" in PRINY, who would never mistake NZ for part of AU.
