Greetings Galoots,
After lurking for over seven months and in two states....
I'm Brian Pennington, 33 years old, married nearly 10 years with two GITs=
(3 and 4 1/2).
Currently I'm living in Manhattan, no not that one, but Manhattan, Kansa=
s courtesy of Uncle Sam
for the next three or so years, maybe less. Mechanical engineer by train=
ing but the Army just
wanted people to have the technical degree, not to use it. But hey it =
is less than 10 years to
retirement.
Began my interest in old tools a couple of years ago when I bought a box =
full of cooper tools at a
junk shop (sun plane, three crozes, a couple of howels, and sundry forged=
tools) while taking a
course in Kansas. Not real practical but interesting. Two years later =
I'm back and have started
attending the farm auctions picking up some decent user tools often reall=
y cheap which appeals
to my bottom feeder nature. Unfortunately, all too often twenty years =
in the barn/chicken coop
has taken its toll.
I've done some sporadic woodworking over the last 8-9 years but found woo=
d turning about two
years ago. Nice low threat environment occasionally punctuated by a chun=
k of wood bouncing
off your faceshield. However, I'm finding myself drawn more toward tradi=
tional hand tools and
appreciation for the skills necessary to master them.
I'll admit I'm a wood collector, really closer to an accumulator. It star=
ted in Hawaii with koa and just
got worse while in San Jose with redwood burl and calro walnut. I probab=
ly moved 200+ pounds
on my last move, mostly bowl blanks.
After completing the obligatory jewelry box and bookcase for SWMBO the =
next planned project is
a set of beds for the boys. I'm sure I'll have more help than I need sin=
ce already my oldest likes to
use his Yankee drill and would be great at using a scrub plane if he weig=
hed more than 40 pounds.
Looking forward to expanding my knowledge and skills.
Best,
Brian
