84510 David Buchanan dblb@p... 2000‑10‑03 Bio
Bio:

Born in NJ in 63.
I have always liked to make things.
Most of what I've made I've given away.
My father was a kind of handy-man with rusty crappy,
cheap tools that I now do not have.
After wasting my time in school I traveled throughout
Europe on a bicycle and America by car arriving in CA in 87.
I live with my partner and our 2 year old son.
I make money programming computers.

I'm currently making a cherry toy box for my son,
hopefully indestructible. I used to paint more than I do now
and have made several picture frames. I've also made a small
mahogany and oak end table from scrap, with a recycled ivory
piano key inlay, shaped and scrimshawed (sp?) in the form of a
magnolia flower that is placed in the center of the top. And many
knotty pine book cases and shelves.

I've generally used the tools that are available from contemporary
hardware stores, which means they suffer under the weight of the corporate
bottom line. Though with patience and determination
they can still be used to produce the desired object. I have a small
worm hole riddled bench (21" x 35" x 3" it originated for use in the
large hallway of an SF flat). It is made from a single conifer that was
originally at least 5' in diameter, salvaged from the demolition of a
Victorian building. I've made a bow saw, many scratch stocks, a
dovetail marker and a marking gauge. With the exception of a large
Millers Falls back saw and a Stanley #4 the old tools I own are the
ones I've recently purchased from members of OLDTOOLS.

I am quite pleased and inspired by the friendly and supportive exchanges
that can be found on this list. I will generally keep my mouth shut and
peruse the FS posts.

Thank you,

David Buchanan
