Many, many thanks to everyone that replied. Based on the replies,
I am going to use the plane and curved scraper for the rounder.
For the rabbet I am going to try the back saw / dovetail saw against
a fence followed by cleanout with a chisel. (I might try the chisel
a trench and then plane, or even the slitting gauge if I can find
plans for it).
The rabbet doesn't have to be perfect. It will be more or less a
frame that goes over a chess board:

Several folks also pointed out that used rabbet planes can be had
quite economically. My initial sticker shock was coming from the
Highland Hardware catalog.
So, consider this a WTB for a good, useable rabbet plane.
Now for the short bio:
My name is Wendell David Tillman and I am a sysadmin by day and an
associate pastor of a full gospel church by night. 10 years of
sysadmin have turned me into somewhat of a technology hater.
Don't get me wrong, I have a DeWalt CMS and a Porter Cable circular
saw that I love. However; those are for general carpentry, framing
etc. IE, *work*.
More and more I am interested primarily in *simplicity*. Wood,
leather, and steel have a great attraction for me. Plastic and
composites tend to leave me cold.
If I were making fine furniture for a living I would probably use
p*wer equipment where ever it was sensible. Since I am not, I would
rather do it the way some would have fifty or hundred years ago.
(OK, I admit it, I secretly think that the industrial revolution
did more to decrease the quality of goods, morale, and homelife
than almost any other event in history.)
Neander tools? None, my plane, backsaw, dovetail saw, chisels are all
from Lowes. I will be hitting more flea markets soon.
I have promised myself (and my wife) that this will be my last
computer job. I would rather be a full time pastor and make some
furniture on the side. Actually, my dream is to have a complete shop
powered from a mainshaft connected to a steam engine. Does that
count as neander?
I hope this post is not too long, I don't normally post messages of
this length. (except for a really bad troll I posted to rec.ww a
year or so ago - making a cutting board from treated 2x4s. I should
be ashamed...)
