50118 groehm@e... (Geoff Roehm) 1998‑09‑20 Bio - Geoff Roehm
Finally, the belated bio.

I live in Sewanee Tennessee, with my wife and 2 daughters,
and have just passed the half-century mark.

Started out building model airplanes, air-brushing tee
shirts, and doing the odd construction job. Did a quite a
bit of drywall, aluminum siding, concrete, stone work, rough
and finish carpentry, mechanical, timber felling,
sawmilling, hewing, and log cabin restoration. Just finished
a circular stair.

Interspersed with college, computer work, and work as a
foreign car mechanic, I apprenticed with a viola maker. I've
built guitars, dulcimers, mandolins, etc., and have done
countless instrument repairs.

As far as tools go, I'm not a "purist." I use what works,
from scraper to CNC, and anything in between. If a hand tool
does the job better, faster, safer, or with less risk,
that's what gets used. For example, I hand plane all the
center joints for tops and backs. However, if I need to
resaw a hundred guitar backs, I resort to a 1926 Fay & Egan
30" bandsaw. I don't collect - really! - every tool in my
shop is used, if not daily, at least occasionally.
