31332 andrew j rappaport <ajr3@c...> 1997‑11‑30 revised bio
hi folks,

i'm sure this will get lost in tomorrow's frenzy, but this is long overdue.
i've actually been on old tools since december '95 but haven't had time to
participate for the last year due to work commitments.

but that should change on tuesday, when i start my family leave thanks to
the birth of the youngest galoot i know:
reuben bayer rappaport, born on october 27

he is our first, and aside from some chronic sleep deprivation we are all
doing well. we are totally trilled and enjoying his presence.

anyway, for the quick bio:
i'm an interior architect living in a suburb of ithaca (etna, pop. 400) and
working in syracuse. i primarily design high end class A office space and
buildings for well heeled companies. my latest projects have been the
common spaces of a new 75,000 sq ft building in rochester and the lobby of
a new hotel.

the hotel has been interesting because it is all mission/craftsman style
(not my choice of styles). i wound up designing the lobby with stickley's
furniture designer (an amazing guy who cut his teeth on good 18th C
furniture). also, while in a meeting on the hotel i sketched a mirror on a
post-it. this is currently in production for the 123 rooms. does this
count as virtual-woodworking?

i've been collecting and using handtools since '92 and have unfortunately
acquired most of the user stuff i want (which limits my desires for cheaper
stuff). i'm now more into either upgrading my own stuff or getting more
collectable useables (with a particular interest in YB infills).

my woodworking is a mix of original contemporary designs and lately a lot
of carpentry. i'm almost done renovating a 1865 italianate which is in the
6th year of the planned one year renovation. i seem to build a lot of
tables of which i sell a couple a year to help fund my tool habits. i've
also designed and built (99% complete after 450 hours) a cherry spiral
stair for my house.

during my family leave, in addition to playing with the kid, i need to
build a large number of bookcases. i just couldn't put the rickety
miss-matched old bookcases into our newly renovated study. they just
wouldn't fit with the rosewood library table.

well, that's about enough to say that i'm glad to be back. happy fmm to
everybody.
