I finally got done with my double walnut slab dining table top! It will sit on top of a trestle base already made and in use. I'm sort of turning the tables on my present table. (Heh heh).I used a mix of tools and techniques as always, but there is a big representation of hand tools involved. For example, I inset the bow ties with a chisel and mallet and cut the mortises for the breadboard ends with same, plus a brace and bits at times. The slabs came from a dead tree the Highway Dept. was removing, when a woman I worked with at my day job at the time asked for the logs and the Highway Dept folks said, "fine". (Imagine that!) She had the logs milled into slabs. She mostly made stools and benches. She asked me to do some custom millwork on some ot the walnut lumber and she gave me the two slabs for my efforts. Zowie. I kept the slabs for years trying to think of how to use them in a fitting (wink) way. I finally thought to join them into the tabletop you see here. It is still in the shop, lying on my workbench. I have loved this project! Now if I can "shang-hi" some strong backs and weak minds (Including me), to help me get it into the house. Phil, Wow! Just...WOW! The slabs had to wait until they "told you" what they "wanted" to be. You obviously heard their voices clearly! John Ruth > On May 31, 2023, at 7:09 PM, Phil E. |

Phil, That's got some amazing figure and colour. Well done to get the best out of what look to be a pair of boards that had at least a few issues in them. I showed your pictures to MLW and she thought the breadboard ends should been walnut as well. I can see her point, but I also see that your idea really highlights the grain in the walnut and frames it nicely. Well done! And also done in a decently paced schedule. None of this unseemly rushing about. Darrell On Wed, 31 May 2023 at 19:09, Phil E. |

Phil, Beautiful work and nice job finessing some beautiful but challenging materials. And yeah, that’s going to take some strong backs. Congratulations! Kevin |

Very nice, Phil! Giving it sort of a Nakashima look is a great use of those slabs. How did you finish it? -----Original Message----- From: oldtools@g... |

Excellent Phil! Gorgeous use of the wood. Seeing the word "slab", I was delighted when I clicked on the link to see that TotalBoat did not play a prominent role in its construction. ;^) It's very gratifying when that particular piece in the lumber rack being saved for that TBD occasion gets its official assignment. I just need to confirm with the List's Parliamentarian to confirm that the time lumber sits in the rack does not count towards "Galoot time" in finishing a project. When does the clock officially start? Paul, in SF |

I feel you Paul. I'm kind of tired ot those epoxy tables, with a little wood attached, as well. Someone on the web said he thought in a few years that epoxy will separate from the wood and will look awful. He may be right as I have seen this in outdoor benches and so forth. Plus it seems as if the epoxy gets "milky" looking left in the sun. Phil E. |
