But

How do I get to do a search over the archive? I visited Chris’s great site,
and if I have an old post ID nunber, I get the post in full, but darned if I can
find a ‘search’ option.

One method is to use Google's "site:" keyword. For example a Google search
for:
   site: swingley.dev/ot/ drawknife
Will show you postings that include "drawknife"
Google may not have the entire archive indexed, however.

Richard (howdy!),

There's a fun way to search by message. Paste
https://swingley.dev/ot/get/######/single/ and replace the ###### with the
number of the message you're looking for. That will bring that message up,
alone (hence the "single" in the link).

And if you want to search by thread, use this:
https://swingley.dev/ot/get/######/thread/####### replacing the ###### with
the number of the message you're looking for. It'll open the message in
threaded form, with all the other messages from that thread on the page.

I don't know how that would work with the new groups.io archive, but it
does work with Chris's swingley.dev archive.

Hope all is well in sunny old Newcastle.

Why struggle with SQL statements when you can tell the mighty Google search
algorithm to do the looking?

Make your way to google, rather than using Ecosia or OceanHero or even DuckDuck
Go.

You will undoubtedly need to refine your search term, else you are left for the
rest of the day pursuing interesting side alleys from authors long gone or
subjects you hadn’t realised were interesting. - as I just did with Darrell’s

Once you have a list, you may, of course access individual postings direct using
their ID number.

Hi Richard

I had the same problem finding old postings that were of interest to me,
and found my solution in about 2004. And I applied it to Oldtools and
many other newsgroups that I was following.

No it won't immediately help newcomers to the group (that will have to
rely on searches of prior material in the manner as already described).

In 2004 I started saving interesting messages that I wanted to keep in
text files by subject matter. Text files have the advantage of being
small in memory requirements as opposed to bloated files from word
processors. I use NoteTab Free from Fookes Software for this record
keeping as well as to codeHTML for websites.

https://www.fookes.com

NoteTab has the added advantage of also being able to search over
multiple text files -- if I wasn't sure which exact files might contain
a particular prior discussion.

So this solution won't help new record keepers immediately, but will
prove absolutely invaluable over the future years.

I do the same sort of thing, saving to email folders on my hard drive ,and
searching with Thunderbird. I suspect I could also search them with
Windows' Explorer.

I seem to have digests going back to 2013. I have a more selective
set of postings from before then though I may at one point have had
the whole thing.

It'd be easy enough for me to dump everything that's in the database to
text format. I doubt you'll find a more complete set of posts than that,
but the tricky bit is figuring out how to keep the structure. Way back
when, mail clients were good about keeping threads and posters were good
about bottom posting, but neither is really true anymore, so keeping track
of the connectedness of a conversation is more challenging.

Anyway, a long time ago I wrote some scripts to dump a "threaded" and
"plain" version of the archives in plain text. If someone is interested in
such a thing, I can dig them up.

Cheers,

Chris

Christopher I am delighted to realize that Galoots are still active.
My old Del died of hardening of the drive.
When I hooked up the new machine I began receiving emails from the group again.
I thought the whole bunch had moved to FB(a pox on thee demon)
Instead my email setup was wrong. My fault.. I never understand how the thing
changes with each upgrade.
Anyway I am pleased to find you once again.
All your work to setup and manage a mailing list that I grew to love and missed
sorely is greatly appreciated.
I am happy knowing you are still willing to sort through the millions of posts.
Hyperbole perhaps, but they add up quickly.
Without this group I would have never gotten involved with restoring old tools
or experienced wandering the aisles of shows, flea markets, and the dark arcane
mysteries of ancient tool making.
