Hi Richard
I had the same problem finding old postings that were of interest to me,
and found my solution in about 2004. And I applied it to Oldtools and
many other newsgroups that I was following.
No it won't immediately help newcomers to the group (that will have to
rely on searches of prior material in the manner as already described).
In 2004 I started saving interesting messages that I wanted to keep in
text files by subject matter. Text files have the advantage of being
small in memory requirements as opposed to bloated files from word
processors. I use NoteTab Free from Fookes Software for this record
keeping as well as to codeHTML for websites.

NoteTab has the added advantage of also being able to search over
multiple text files -- if I wasn't sure which exact files might contain
a particular prior discussion.
So this solution won't help new record keepers immediately, but will
prove absolutely invaluable over the future years.
