273871 Dan Beck <drumsandbacon@g...> 2021‑06‑05 What is this wood screw vise thingy
Does anyone have any idea what this this is:

Perhaps a jig or aid of some sort?

Looks like a miter jack for shooting miters.

It’s a donkey’s ear. I have a near identical one under a bench awaiting a bit
of fettling of the joint between the screw and the moveable jaw. Seems to be
missing summat.. I wonderd if it was made up for a particular case, but the
(apparent) 45 degree slope of the threaded jaw is pretty conclusive to my mind.
The 2 witness holes t screws? on the right show where the fixed jaw would have
been, and I cannot account for the absence of the face slope of the moving jaw.
Either a made up (sacrificial) part now lost, or it split and was discarded, or,
as I hinted, someone had a need for something special and adapted it.

Now reminded of ‘yet another’ bit of fettling and selling off needed.

Dan and other Gentle Galoots,

I hate to disagree with my esteemed colleagues, but according to Salaman's
Dictionary of Woodworking Tools, the following picture shows a donkey's ear,
more precisely "Donkey's Ear Shooting Board", used for "planing a mitre in the
thickness of a board (e.g. along its edge rather than across its end." This is
one I made recently just for the fun of it.

Next is a picture of what Salaman calls a "Mitre Shooting Block" or "Mitre
Jack", made by our own Adam Maxwell:

Salaman says that "In use the workpiece, which has been sawn to a mitre, is
cramped between the triangular blocks, and the joint trued with the Plane."

Translations:   "Mitre" == "Miter" and "cramped" == "clamped".

And they come in a variety of configurations. I had one w/ the triangular block
and this one came along. I have found it more useful so I sold off the other
one.

When you say ‘esteemed colleagues’ I think you mean me!

and I’m very happy to be corrected. I just always knew the device as a donkeys
ear. Apologies for leading anyone astray.

A Mitre Jack eh? - doesn’t have the same ring to it, but hey ho.

Thanks Chuck.

Thank you, one and all, who responded. I truly appreciate the help.

I thought it might be a mitre jack (with some missing pieces) but I was not at
all sure. I think I will attempt to replace what is missing and make this
functional again. I'm not sure how much I will use it, but I have a soft spot
for jigs and shop aids, esp those with wooden screws.
