273389 Stager, Scott P. <StagerS@m...> 2021‑04‑08 Anybody else regularly not receiving some emails from oldtools?
For a few weeks I have not been receiving some emails generated by oldtools.
The latest instance was Dan Becks request for a Froe. Scottg replied and I
receivedf that reply. I found the original on the oldtools groups.io site as
part of the thread.

Numerous others have been missing in recent weeks. I never got Chris’s initial
announceent of the photo side link including photo slide show of his bridge
building. I managed to see that because one of the replies which I did receive
still had the link.

Getting pretty frustrating.

Same thing here. Not always, just sometimes.   I generally pick up the
thread of the discussion from whichever participant 'replies to' without
trimming away the text of original post.  So far I haven't missed
anything important enough to bring me to raise the problem as an issue.

Regards to all, (and particularly Chris S.)

Wait, are we NOT supposed to trim messages anymore?? Not that I always
remember to trim, but it would be convenient not to have to do that anymore.

Or dear , please continue to trim, almost aggressively.

As a regular reader and searcher of the archives, I really wish we were all
better about that, myself included, over the past 20+ years.

Besides, think of all the 1s and 0s you could have saved.

Well definitel trim - just leave enough behind so a reader can figure out what
your are replying too. Maybe a critical link or two.

Definitely trim the boiler plate at the bottom. You wouldn’t believe what that
boilerplate and links look like by the time I receive them. My post office re-
routes links through some kind of protective site that turns them into complete
gibberish, so I can’t even tell what the original was.

Yep - this side of the atlantic the trade winds seem to whisk a few away - as
Tony Blanks mentioned - not all, and not enough to ‘know’ - but there was no
post about froes.

On the other hand - you get some surprising pop up message half way through a
dialogue and it’s a brain exercise to work out what the chippings is going on.

- just pointing this up as another data point in case there’s a way of doing
some checking.

It's many years since I administered email, so I could well be mistaken,
but I think this is a result of spam-filtering products being a little
over-aggressive. Any message with numerous recipients could conceivably
be taken by software to be spam, There are likely more than a few
software products in use which produce somewhat different results,
resulting in a lack of consistency. You can always talk to your your
email provider, but in most cases, tier one support will have no idea
how to  resolve your issue, and the email specialists won't even want to
talk to you about the products or methods they use to filter email.

GGs,

I haven't seen any evidence of missing messages to my account (gmail) or on
the Archive (my personal server), which makes me think this is likely an
issue of filtering by your mail provider, either messages winding up in
Spam or outright rejected. Typically, rejections are bounced back to the
sender (groups.io) and you'd get a message if that happened warning you
that messages are bouncing from your account. I can see the list of those
currently "boucing" and none of the people responding to this thread are on
that list.

The email system is very resiliant to distruptions with a mail server
trying many times to get through to a recipient before finally giving up
and bouncing the message back. Since those reporting issues aren't on the
bounce list, this implies that the mail server attempted delivery, your
mail server accepted the messages, and the message was lost at some point
after that. Once a mail server gets the status 250 code (message accepted)
from the recipient's server, it's out of the picture.

Mailing lists are hard because the individual messages are coming from a
variety of different email addresses, and the sending server (groups.io)
doesn't match the original sender's domain, so these messages look
suspicious. For example, this message will likely have a From header of <
cswingle@g...>, but if you look inside the headers, the last server in
the message chain will have a Received header of "groups.io", not "gmail.com".
There are additional headers intended to make it clear that the mssage is
part of a list and this discrepancy is to be expected, but of course, those
can be spoofed by spammers as well.

Anyway, I don't have any easy solutions, but I'm pretty sure this is
happening within your mail provider's service. It would be nice to think
they would consider you a valuable customer and would respond to complaints
about the service you are receiving from them. If you can find a missing
message in the Archive, I might be able to retrieve the headers from that
message and this could be useful information to pass on to your provider.

And yes, please trim your replies, and reply below the statements you are
responding to. It takes a bit of work, but it's good for the Archives and
it's easier to understand what you are trying to say.

Cheers,

ListMom, Chris
