1187 Walter Mlynko <waltm@w...> 1996‑06‑24 Introducing myself - a basic bio
Hello,
My name is Walt Mlynko, a part time woodworker and a hand tool
newbie, at least compared with most folks on this forum. My day
job is engineering at IBM but at night it is a basic basement
workshop that turns out an occasional cabinet or table. I've
recently begun aquiring some old tools at flea markets here
in Northern Vermont. I'm hearing from several places that old
tools are supposed to be better than most of the new ones, so I took that
as an excuse to spend some weekend mornings browsing the
local flea markets and picking up stuff that "looked interesting"
without knowing what it was worth. Well I've probably
bought mostly junk, but maybe the #7 Stanley-Bailey jointer
plane for $30 was ok, i''m not sure. I've got planes made
by Victor and Seargant as well as a beast of a wooden one
that stares at me from the top of the shelf.

So, I don't know what to do with these planes, but I do know that
I've gotten a bug for planes since i've taken some fine shavings
by tweaking the bevel on the iron of my Indian made Anant #6 (foreplane).

So, here I am, maybe a bit shy at first - i'll probably wait and
learn some more tool basics before jumping in on discussions(am going
thru the FWW books on Bench Tools and Planes and Chisels as well as an
occasional peek at the Blood and Gore).

If there is something a newbie should know,, you know, mistakes so many
people make and you are dying to tell me, by all means email me at
waltm@w... or waltm@v... especially if you know
a good resting place for some of the junk i'm accumulating.

Walt
