My name is Richard Burton and I am a collector of old tools when I am not
doing my full time job with computers. I started collecting old tools when
my house filled up with old furniture and the only space left was for
smaller items. About one third of my collection is woodworking tools
and the rest is from other industries. My main use for the woodworking
tools is fixing old furniture and I also try to use each tool as part of
my study of the tool's history that I enjoy researching.

My current project is figuring out the use of about 100 tools from
a copper engraver's toolbox and the use of 20 tools (mostly hammers)
from a coppersmith. On the woodworking front, I have a whats-it
made by plane maker Mockridge and Francis of Newark, NJ that I
cannot find what its use was and a very old burl wood bowl with
many of its original tool marks: bowl adz marks in the inside, the outside
seems to have been formed with a draw knife and the bottom of the
bowl has ax marks. I am look for a detailed description on making
bowls from burl using hand tools.

I am 47 years old and a member of EAIA, Crafts of New Jersey and I
do volunteer work at the Mercer museum.
