A Phobia We Would All Like To See Cured.
by Louis G. Schmidt

Rhykenogicophobia - A persistent fear and/or avoidance
of woodworking planes and most tools in general, experienced
mainly by females. Very often the phobia-provoking stimuli
(tools) are endured with intense anxiety. Repeated exposure
to the stimuli almost invariably leads to an immediate and
often prolonged anxiety response (e.g. pouting, tantrums,
avoidance, crying, brief seizures, etc.) At present there
is no prescribed treatment for this phobia and the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 3rd
Edition Revised, has yet to recognize this phobia. However,
it is certain that many tool collectors readily recognize
these symptoms in their wifes and/or girlfriends.
On a personal note; It would be a welcomed feature, if
major tool museums throughout the U.S.A. (e.g. Mercer,
Hagley, etc.), were to create holding cells for wifes and/or
girlfriends within the confines of the museum. Eirther this
or have an arrangement with the county holding jail,
so that tool buffs may look at tool collections, in an
unharried, relaxed, quiet, and pout free environment.
