I'll post my wanted classifieds first and then if you are interested you
can read my BIO.

Wanted: miscellaneous parts for an OTIS A. SMITH Rockfall Conn.
U.S.A. PAT MAR.7.82 & APR.1.84 combination plane. This beauty has
only about 6 complete sets - front sole, moulding iron, and matching rear
sole. I have a handfull of other profiles where the front is
missing, or the rear, or just the iron.
Also Wanted: Recommend your best source of Beech. I have totes and
wedges to replace.
My gloat: Utah is somewhat tool dry but dated, with many early
pioneers arriving after 1847. Just 8 weeks ago I bought a tool
box with 13 tools inside. The box had 3 generations of nails holding
it together, beginning with 1 1/2" forged square nails. Inside: one
Scheffield Eng. Brace, two american smooth box miter planes (one with a
cracked side) and 10 american moulding planes ( hollows, rounds, quirks,
ogees). Most were manufactured in the 1830's so I am getting a
glimpse of the craftsman that ventured to start a life here,
traveling across the plains and mountains with his prize posessions.
The antique store price of $340.00 was initially too high for me, until
I divided it by the parts. I couldn't sleep for days, just thinking
about the tools sitting on the store shelf. You can relate to this
feeling. I managed to convince my wife that I would sacrifice food and
water to obtain these. The sacrifice was painful, but worth it.
I'm new to this forum. I really appreciate gleaning from your collective
wisdom, this is a great learning experience for me. I can't say I'm
experienced or a newbie. Don't know anybody around here with similar
interests, that was until I found this fine group. I invite you to
take a gander at my personal homestead, (homepage)

to get an idea about my backward ways and the direction I'm heading.
Or if you just want a summary: I'm from Colorado (my disclaimer).
I'm only 37 but have 7 children (Utah family) and work as a Chemist
for the city water department. Also pursuing a Masters degree in
Civil /Environmental Engineering working on a
project in Bolivia, South America. I drive a 1950 Ford Fordor Custom
Deluxe or my 1951 Ford 3/4 ton truck. My heart is in woodworking and
old tools. I'm a user and love to research the history of my old
tools. Now beginning Blacksmithing, it is a natural companion to old
woodworking tools.
Goals: Build a log home and furnish it myself. Send off my children
with heirlooms that they will cherish. Having grandkids some day,
sitting on my lap and making curls of pine, or outside with me
splitting firewood or winging an adze on a log.
